ANSWERS FOR HW4 4.20 Write the net ionic equation for any reaction that occurs on mixing : a.) Solutions of KBr and AgNO3 b). A solution of HNO3 and Ca metal to produce calcium nitrate and H2 gas c) Solutions of LiOH and Fe (III) chloride a) The ions present from the reactants are K, + Br - , Ag + , and NO 3 - . The two possible products are KNO3 and AgBr and Table 4.1 indicates AgBr is insoluble. The net ionic equation is: Ag + + Br - à AgBr (s) b) Ca and HNO 3 react via the redox reaction Ca + 2HNO 3 - à Ca +2 + H 2 (g) The net ionic equation for the reaction is Ca (s) + 2H + (aq) à Ca +2 (aq) + H 2 (g) c) The ions present from the reaction are Li + , HO - , Fe +3 , and Cl - (aq). The two possible products are LiCl, and Fe(OH) 3 and Table 4.1 indicates Fe(OH) 3 is insoluble. The new ionic equation for the reaction is: Fe +3 + 3HO - (aq) - à Fe(OH) 3 (s)
