Race in the “New South” Describe some of the ways in which African Americans were marginalized in Southern society during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Discuss the alternative paths of accommodation and resistance that black leaders proposed in response to their position in Southern society. 1. Civil war ended slavery very abruptly a. It had been a slavery-nation, and suddenly it was supposed to be a non- slavery nation b. Was segregation going to emerge very prevalently in the nation? c. Nobody had a blueprint for what would happen 2. Reconstruction Amendments a. 13th Amendment i. Outlawed Slavery/Involuntary Servitude b. 14th Amendment (defines who can be a citizen of the US and what their rights are) i. No states shall abridge privileges of citizens – life, liberty, property – without due process 1. Can’t take rights away w/o court ruling ii. Equal protection of the laws for all c. 15th Amendment i. Right to vote cannot be denied on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude
