People Baillargeon, Renée: Argues, along with Spelke , that infants do not just learn from association or perceptual experience. They “interpret physical events in accord with general principles of continuity . . . and solidity .” She says that these principles are innate. Chomsky, Noam: Behavior is not just about stimulus, response, and reinforcement, or input and output. One example is language acquisition. Language acquisition cannot be explained through input and output. Utterances are generated by grammar, which is complex and abstract. We cannot rely on behavior alone to analyze language. We should study human cognitive systems, such as language, as though it were some complex bodily organ. The possible variety of human languages is sharply limited. He created the poverty of stimuli argument. Thought UG is a system of principles, conditions, and rules that are elements or properties of all human languages. He distinguished competence (what we know about language) from performance (how we use language). He is a nativist . Descartes, René: All of our knowledge of the external world is mediated by representations. Representations are mental objects/images that stand for things in the outside world. This is known as his Representational Theory of Mind . According to Descartes, we can have different kinds of representations linked by an abstract mental representation. Descartes claims that representations have no necessary connection to the things they represent (representational skepticism ), that one can study the mind without paying attention to the reality it purports to represent—i.e. one can just focus on the symbols and processes (methodological solipsism ), and that the mind and body are two completely different, absolutely distinct kinds of things (Cartesian dualism ), thereby, laying out the dualist perspective. The body is divisible and mortal, and the mind not. He is one of the so-called grandfathers of the cognitive approach. He distinguished between the passive in perception, i.e. sensations are presented without consent being required, and the active, which forms or produces ideas. He also claimed that the mind does not receive immediately the impressions from all parts of the body, but only from the brain. He believed in innateness. Meditation 1 senses have deceived him, i.e. been misled by sensory information in the past. Meditation 2 ones consciousness implies ones existence.
