SC121 Unit 4 Assignment PART 1 1. Why are cells are important to the body Cells are important to the body because they help all systems of the body contribute to homeostasis of the body. They are the basic, living, structural, and functional units of the body. (Tortora & Derrickson) 2. Which organelle do you think would kill you the fastest if you lost it? Explain your answer. Mitochondria. Mitochondria are the “powerhouse” for the cell. (Tortora & Derrickson) Without a power source for the cell to generate ATP the cell would die as it would be unable to perform virtually all biochemical processes that are needed to sustain life. 3. How is cell shape related to function? Give at least 3 examples and explain. A cell’s shape is relates it to its function within the body. (Tortora & Derrickson) Red blood cells are small, flat discs that provide a large surface area the helps contribute to its function of passing oxygen to other cells. (Torora & Derrickson) Also their shape aids them in fitting through narrow capillaries and through the sharp corners of the circulatory system. () Sperm cells have a long tail that is compared to a whip. This shape is uses for locomotion or movement. (Tortura & Derrickson) This shape aids them in their ability to swim long lengths to be able to reach an egg for fertilization. (- function-8600698.html) Nerve cells are extended and this allows them to conduct nerve impulses over great distances. (Tortora & Derrickson) The length of the thin extensions off of them allow the electrical messages to travel quicker than the chemical messages between neurons. A few longer neurons translates to faster transfer of signals than a chain made up of many shorter neurons. () 4. Choose one organelle or cellular component and research a disorder that affects it. Then, answer the following: What is the name of the disorder? Tay-Sachs Disease Which part of the cell is affected? Lysosomes are the organelle affected by this disease. Lysosomes contribute to the breakdown of waste materials inside the cells. They are the main component and are considered the stomach of the cell.
