Finding out JD’s self-treatment is important. I would find out if JD had previously taken any herbs or over the counter medication to combat his symptoms. Obtaining this information could change the course of potential prescribed treatment due to possible medication interactions. I would ask JD if he’d previously been told about having any allergies, as well as ask about his work, ultimately obtaining a thorough past medical history is imperative for this patient. This information could lead to a differential diagnosis. I would also ask JD about any other symptoms he’s noticed (like sore throat, wheezing, and shortness of breath both with exertion and while resting). Due to the cough, I would also ask JD about his smoking history. I would treat Mr. JD because his symptoms have lasted longer than a normal cold typically lasts. From what Mr. JD has explained thus far, it seems as though he started out with a viral cold but developed a bacterial sinus infection. Dependent about the length and severity of
