Week 5 DiscussionWhile watching the video media Emergent literacy: Classroom demonstration it made me recall the year I taught Kindergarten. I taught Kindergarten for a year at Thackston School in Knoxville, Tennessee. My students favorite time of the day was story time. I had a round rug in the middle of my classroom, and every day they would sit around the edge, and Iwould read them aloud two books. The video media this week showcased Mr. Recio’s Pre-K class where the students were engaged and excited about the lesson and the planned independent activities (Laureate Education, 2014i). The physical structure of the learning environment was set-up in a waywhere students have full access to all the tools and materials they need to be academically successful. Examples of tools and materials include colorful letters, big books, a sand and water table and print rich labels with pictures. The classroom design consisted of areas where students could read, write, work on computers, complete art projects, and participate in imaginative play. I noticed Mr. Recio interacted one on one with students engaging them in conversation and being active in the activity. Mr. Recio’s interaction proves he has built motivational relationships with his students as well as created a trusting and comfortable classroom environment.
