Read 6706 – Discussion 2I do not one hundred percent recall when I began to read in my early years. If I had to guess a range of time it would be between the age of four and six. I come from a family of educators who value education at the highest level. Both my parents have their doctorate degrees. My mother retired seven years ago as a Middle School Principal. Both my parents instilled high expectations for my sister and I by reminding us “failure isn’t anoption.” I do have fond memories of my parents reading to me each night before bed. During the summer, my mom would take my sister and I to the public library for story time and to check out books. I feel it is essential for educators to create a safe environment where reading is encouraged. I believe it is important for teachers to know the interests of their students. At the beginning of each school year, I have my students fill out a questionnaire on their favorite type books as well as books they would like to read but haven’t. I then take those responses and use my Scholastic points and order books of their interest. This is one example of how I have been able to expand my classroom library over the years.
