As a classroom teacher, I feel it is crucial for me to refine and energize my practice for selecting the right text for reading and writing instruction for Pre-K – 3 literacy learners. Texts today can be found in many forms, from paper printed books to digital media and all texts have a place in classrooms (Laureate Education, 2014a). As I reflect and make a list of books I want for my third-grade class. My records consist of all types of books fitting in all four quadrants of the Literacy Matrix according to Dr. Douglas Hartman (Laureate Education, 2014a). Dr. Newman stressed the importance as educators we need to make sure students at an early age are exposed to informational texts and taught how the text structure works (Laureate Education, 2014l). The video media Informational text in the early years opened my eyes and clarified the importance of exposing students to informational texts and not to stress the inferences of narrative texts.
