2 Reflecting on Effective Literacy Environments Literacy development is an ongoing process beginning early in a person’s life. Both emergent and beginning literacy learners show academic growth when their literacy environment is focused on motivating them to learn resulting in an increase in their academic growth. During the emergent stage of literacy, students are given a series of diagnostic tests in order to determine their individual literacy needs. Emergent literacy implies learners have the capability to become literate beginning at birth and continuing throughout their lives (Reutzel & Cooter, 2015). Once student’s literacy needs have been identified, then the role of the teacher is to plan instructional tasks based on the needs of both the emergent and beginning literacy learners in their classroom. To best meet the learning needs of emergent and beginning literacy learners instructional strategies are implemented in instruction to assist students in mastering skills needed to become lifelong readers. An effective instructional strategy implemented with both emergent and beginning literacy learners is digital storytelling. Digital storytelling assists with the mastery of literacy skills by telling stories with the use of technology. What is digital storytelling? Digital storytelling according to the University of Houston, tells stories using a variety of multimedia, including graphics, audio, video, and publishing (University of Houston, College of Education, 2015). Digital storytelling gives students the resources to create and interact with the use of stories.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
