Griner 1 Andrea Griner ENGL 1101/ Sullivant 07 Nov 2006 Paper 4, Draft 1 The Art of Education and the Influence of an Educator Pablo Picasso once said, “There are painters who transform the sun to a yellow spot, but there are others who, with the help of their art and intelligence, transform a yellow spot into the sun.” Teachers are a lot like artists, but instead of molding clay, they mold ideas. The canvas on which they paint is their students’ minds. As with art, people have different ways of defining when a teacher has done quality work. Some measure an educator’s success by their students’ test scores or passage rates. Others believe that years of experience make a “good teacher.” Certainly there are many concrete and abstract ways to gauge the quality of a teacher. One way is to assess how he or she presents a subject. A poor teacher can transform the sun, or the subject being presented, into a simple yellow spot. He or she can make the topic seem uninteresting and one-dimensional. Conversely, a good teacher has the ability to do the opposite. A good teacher, like a good artist, can transform a subject that seems boring and simple into something fascinating. A good teacher can make a subject come alive. All students in the public school system start out learning the basic subjects. Math, science, social studies or history, and English are taught basically the same everywhere at the elementary level . As school years go by, additional subjects, like foreign languages and economics, are added. Others, such as art and music, are less emphasized. The further a student goes, the more specialized his or her studies become; although most colleges offer double-
