6. Gauguin,  was a Sunday painter, primarily a stockbroker had 5 kids, left them to move  to Tahiti and paint a) Day of the God (Mahana no Atua)  c.1894 -didn’t like Tahiti b/c it was too civilized -created works that were fantasies of what he thought Tahiti should be -took statue from another culture- Java -may have something to do with the cycle of life very abstract in front, “unrealistic color” creates scene of the  imagination, like Van Gogh-uses color for symbolism  Van Gogh shot himself in a field, sold one painting during lifetime, now they are the most  sought after! 7. Edward Munch  The Scream , 1893 -painting part of a series showing the cycle of life, influenced by Van Gogh, uses  his colors -scream reverberating throughout painting -perspective makes you recede too quickly, pulls you in -ominous figures in background -skull looking figure, man or woman? -post-impressionist and post-realism 1885: Munch saw effects of Cracatoa, wrote about colors he saw, this was  landscape used for the scream
