Direct Explanation Explain what students should know and be able to do and how they will be assessed. Learning Target: o I can draw conclusions and make reasonable predications about the content and concepts that will be covered in the upcoming unit. Significance: o This unit focuses on the contributions of Ruby Bridges to include her persistence in gaining an education in a school that was refusing to integrate in the South and her work towards Civil Rights. Ruby Bridges is known for her tolerance and diligence as a six year old child, but why was integrating so important to her? To answer this question we must investigate how Ruby Bridges displayed tolerance and perseverance. You will learn during this unit why all citizens are free to go to school together even today. Assessment: o Students will make a prediction about the following compelling question for the unit: Why do we go to school and how did Ruby Bridges influence your school experience? Unit Concepts/ Vocabulary: o segregation o contribution o Civil Rights Activate Prior Knowledge/ Build Background Knowledge: o –Why do you come to school?
