19 th  Century: 1850-1900,  Part 2   Mary Cassatt -  - Japanese woman holding child      (look up name of painting) Wood block Japanese.  One of the most important phenomena of the later 19th  Century.  Mary has seen these in her friend Degas' studio.  She uses Asian features  for the women, acknowledging her debt to the Japanese.  The colors are solid, there  is no chiaroscuro.  There is a very distinct outline where the color is contained, which  shows the carving into the block.  With Japanese prints there are no indications of  linear perspective.  There is an oblique angle in this picture.   Harunogu.        - Print of Geisha     Ukyo:   Pictures of the floating world.  Way about depicting transient pleasures that  are not with us forever.  These kinds of things were considered by Japanese as low  class art.   Ego, Edo?:  Name of time period of Japanese history.     Woodblock:   Form of engraving.     Toloya Hokket.    - Raiko Attacks a Demon.     One of the greatest masters of woodblock print are Hokusai.  The Great Wave 1831. Did an incredible amount of works, including screens.  The mountain in the back is  mount Hogie? Which was very significant to the Japanese.       Hiroshigo,  - Maple Leaves      c. 1850 There is cropping and a very unusual view point that has not been seen in western  art.  Western artist would emphasize the background, not the bark in the foreground.  Bright intense color, and up-tilted perspective.  Created a craze for all things  Japanese 1860-70 called Japanesema: fascination with all things Japanese.     Post Impressionism Artists
