Francie is working at her job as a reader when she realizes it is almost time for the start of a new school year. Since Francie hasn’t heard her mother talk about her return to high school Francie decides to speak to her mother about the subject. Neeley, Francie, and her mother talk about high school and the children discover that there is only enough money to send one of them to high school. Neeley doesn’t want to return to high school and Francie does, but Francie’s mother ultimately decides that it will be Neeley who will return to high school. Both Francie and Neeley are outraged at their mother’s decision and Francie’s mom tries to explain her reasoning for her decision by saying, “‘Because if I don’t
