NURS 6201: Leadership in Nursing and Healthcare WEEK 9 Leadership Styles There are three types of leadership styles: authoritarian, democratic, and laissez-faire (Marquis & Huston, 2017) Authoritarian leaders are often found in large organizations; these leaders make decisions without the input of others, dictate commands, criticism is punitive, and they have a firm control over groups (Marquis & Huston, 2017). Democratic leaders involve shared decision making, control is minimal, and autonomy is high (Marquis & Huston). Laissez- faire leaders give their members freedom (Mind Tools, 2019). These leaders provide little or no direction; there is no control and decision making is dispersed throughout the group (Marquis & Huston, 2017). All leadership styles are both non-beneficial and beneficial depending on the situation and team, and all leaders have their unique leadership style.
