As an outsider, it is obvious that what the group of people are conforming to is in fact insane. From the inside, the situation seemsnormal because everyone is partaking in it, which makes it seem right. “The Lottery” and “Harrison Bergeron” are two different short stories that display insane conformity. Both are extremely similar but also abundantly different. “The Lottery” is about a small town that gets together and holds a very complex “Lottery”. This lottery is a lottery like no other. One does not wish to win this lottery because theend result is death. The lottery starts off with the heads of the families coming up to the stand where Mr. Summers is calling out their names to draw a piece of paper. Once all family heads have drawn a piece of paper, the drawers then read their papers. The family holding the black dotis selected for the first round. Once the family is determined, a new piece of paper for each family member is placed into the box and a new drawing is held. The same process completed. Whoever draws the black dot is selected, but this time wins the lottery. They are then pulled aside and stoned by the entire town. In this particular lottery, The Hutchinson family won the first round, and the overall winner was Tessie Hutchinson. As unfortunate and insane as it is, the people of the town still go through with the annual lottery and a permanent end to it is not likely in the future. In the people’s eyes, if they do not conform and perform the lottery than they will 1
Cabreranot bear good crop in their town. It is said “Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon”, meaning if theydo not sacrifice a human being than god will not bless them with good crop.
