Unformatted text preview: Hybrid/Fuel 1 Hybrid Engines and Fuel Cells Tara Larkin Brett Warner Kirsten Lewis Lindsey Lewis Penn State University April 21, 2007 Hybrid/Fuel 2 Hybrid Engines and Fuel Cells Hybrid engines are rapidly becoming the new technology of today and fuel cells are quickly being built up to the technology of the future. These advancements in science are much more efficient and produce less emissions making them more environmentally friendly. Throughout this paper, we will examine the benefits and problems with each technology; the mode of transportation in which it is used for and the impact each has on the environment. We will come to the conclusion on weather these technologies are better overall then the already existing systems for transportation. The History 1898 was the year that Ferdinand Porsche developed the hybrid engine for the car. It worked as the gasoline section of the engine powered by a generator, which powered electric wheel motors. Seventeen years later, Woods Motor Vehicle paired a four- cylindar combustion engine with the electric motor. During the 60’s, after years of research, Victor Wouk built a prototype of the electric-hybrid vehicle. In the 90’s it became effective; the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight were the first successful hybrid cars and today the hybrid car is becoming more popular. In 2003 General Motors introduced a diesel version of what they have constructed in the hybrid cars. It was designed to be a “military truck.” In 2004, the International Truck and Engine and Eaton Corporation were chosen to build diesel-electric hybrid trucks as for a US pilot program. Hybrid engines are quickly becoming an important technology into today’s world. Fuel cells are just as important to the future as hybrid engines, but not nearly as developed or ready for mass production. England as the home of the first fuel cell ever built 150 years ago (Fuel Cells.) Throughout the past century and a half, fuel cells have been held back by the cost of them, but have continued to develop. Hybrids The hybrid car was the first hybrid vehicle developed. People are generally concerned with the performance of a hybrid car as supposed to a non-hybrid. Hybrids are identical in model and performance as regular cars, except they perform at 40% more efficiency, for several different reasons. Hybrids contain smaller and more efficient engines. They are designed with aerodynamics and made with lightweight materials....
