Test Two Study Guide 29/10/2007 20:48:00 Text chapter 6-Deviance 1. Know the definition of deviance, stigma (what types of stigma are discussed?), and       crime (including the types). Deviance- the violation of social norms  Stigma- the disapproval attached to violation of the expected norms  o Behavioral o Character o physical  Crime- the forms of deviance in which formal penalties are imposed by the  society-specific type of deviance 2. Know the sociological claims about deviance (who is deviant, anything inherently       deviant, etc…?) We are all deviant sometimes Deviance is socially constructed Nothing is inherently deviant 3. Know the definition and examples of primary and secondary deviance and the       claims of labeling theory. Labeling theory- behavior is not intrinsically deviant, but becomes deviant  because it is labeled as such o Members of a society define what is deviant and impose sanctions for  that behavior o Individuals who engage in primary deviance are not labeled, but those  who engage in secondary deviance are Being labeled can reinforce deviant behavior by: o Increasing alienation o Forcing increased interaction with deviant peers o Motivating juvenile delinquents to positively value and identify with the  deviant status

Deviance becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy Those with less power in society are more likely to be labeled as deviant 4. Know the definition and examples of occupational crime (including corporate and  white collar varieties). 5. Know the functions of prisons (what we expect them to do) and what they actually  do. 6. Know the claim of differential association theory and its prediction of under what       conditions people will engage in deviant or conforming behavior. Differential association theory- conformity or deviance is learned from those  with whom we spend the most time. 7. Know the reasons given for why the administration of the death penalty is  problematic for people concerned with justice, fair treatment, and equality under the  law. Text chapter 7-Strat 8. Know Marx’s bases for distribution of scare resources in a society and which one       predominates in a capitalist economy.
