Module 3 : Physical and data link layers Preview The application layer (introduced in the previous module) is the top layer of the Internet network model. In this module, you will explore the bottom two layers, dealing with the physical connections between computers (focusing on circuits) and the movement of a message from one computer to the next. The physical layer provides the platform for sending and receiving messages, and the data link layer converts the bits transferred across the physical layer into coherent messages, which it then passes to the next layer (the network layer). This module is one of the most technical of the course and addresses concepts that you may not have direct experience with or an easy way to visualize. However, it is an important element of networking that helps form your solid foundation. Your textbook discusses the physical and data link layers in Chapters 3 and 4, but the information presented in the textbook is often more detailed than is needed for this course. You should therefore focus on the sections of the textbook chapters that have been assigned as required reading, as well as the information presented in this module. The balance of Chapters 3 and 4 are optional reading. Knowledge objectives z Distinguish between physical and logical circuits. z Distinguish between digital and analog data, and explain the advantages of digital data. z Explain the circumstances under which a shared or dedicated circuit would be more appropriate. z Describe the common forms of guided and wireless media. z Explain bandwidth, and relate bandwith to the capacity of a circuit. z Describe how data is transmitted, and explain the need for conversion of data formats. z Explain the functions of modems and codecs. z Describe multiplexing, and provide examples of its common forms. z Explain the roles of data link protocols, including media access control, error control, and message delineation. z Describe the conditions under which media access controls are most important. z Explain the common sources of errors and how they can be prevented. z Explain ARQ, and distinguish between the two main forms. z Define asynchronous transmission, asynchronous file transfer, and synchronous transmission, and give examples of the related protocols. z Define throughput.
