Module 6: Wireless local area networks Preview In the previous module, you learned about wired LANs. In this module, you turn your attention to wireless LANs, which are gaining popularity, largely due to their low cost and the emergence of accepted standards. As you work through this material, recall that the advantages of networking in general are the same for both wired and wireless solutions, but each option also has particular strengths and weaknesses in terms of their inherent technologies and how they are implemented. Knowledge objectives z Differentiate between the Wi-Fi standards IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11b, and IEEE 802.11g. z Compare the roles that standard setters and commercial enterprises play in the advances and acceptance of Wi-Fi. z Explain the topology of WLANs. z Compare and contrast media access control in wired and wireless LANs. z Defend the emergence of 802.11g as the replacement for 802.11b Wi-Fi. z Relate Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technologies, including how both can be integrated within a wireless network. z Explain how Bluetooth 2 and Ultrawideband technologies are expected to improve on the current Bluetooth. z Incorporate WLAN design best practices by weighing the methods for maximizing effective data rates against the costs to do so. z Support the argument for integrating wired and wireless networks within an organization. z Explain the reasons for, and the steps involved in, performing site surveys. z Assess the wireless security tools currently available, and explain how weaknesses in these tools are expected to be improved on by technologies currently under development. z Provide examples of ways to improve WLAN performance, and categorize them based on the three main strategies for WLAN performance improvement. Skill competencies z Assemble a list of reference links that you can use to stay up-to- date on progressions in wireless networking technologies and security. z Prepare budget information for upgrading from 802.11b to either 802.11g or 802.11a. z Research options for wireless antennas based on the needs of a

physical WLAN design. Professional values z Explain the drivers behind the increased popularity of wireless networking. z Assess the benefits of wireless networking in relation to the security risks. z Within the context of an organization's specific needs, choose between wired and wireless networks, based on your evaluation of costs and benefits. z Evaluate the severity and importance of wireless security issues, based on risks to the organization. z Assess the risks to the organization that result from the trend toward increased employee mobility, and propose strategies to mitigate this risk. z Debate the ethical implications of accessing someone else’s unprotected network without their knowledge.
