Tara Larkin Practicum 2 11/8/07 CEPHALEXIN Cephalexin is an antibiotic that kills bacteria in the body. It is in the group of drugs called cephalosporins. To improve the accomplishments upon Penicillin, which was first developed by Alexander Fleming, Howard Florey and Ernst Chain in 1943, the Cephalosporin class was developed. Its generic name is Keflex or Pulvules. Cephalexin kills bacteria by halting its ability to form cell walls; the bacteria break up and then die. Cephalexin, as discussed earlier, is often referred to as Keflex or Pulvules; it can also be called keftabs and biocef. These are all brand names for Cephalexin, but Penicillin is also used for the same purpose with the same side effects. Keflex (Cephalexin brand name) is used to treat infectious bacteria in the body; specifically pneumonia, bone, ear, skin and urinary tract infections. This is only used for bacterial infections, viral infections such as colds and flu would be unaffected by Cephalexin. Some of the common side effects of Keflex are upset stomach, diarrhea, vomiting, skin rash; if any of these symptoms do not go away or become more severe, you must immediately contact your doctor. Itching, hives, difficulty breathing or swallowing, wheezing, unusual bleeding or bruising, soar throat, mouth soars or vaginal infection are more serious side effects that need to be treated immediately if they occur after taking Cephalexin.
