Psychology 206 – Class Notes – 9/22/08 OBSERVATIONAL RESEARCH Advantages * Natural setting Low (or no) demand characteristics Disadvantages Low internal validity (lack control of confounds) Experimental bias Use multiple (blind) raters and compute interrater reliability The raters should not know the hypothesis of the study The raters should be independent Definitely refer to the literature For Wednesday Do exercise #10 Good review for the exam! o The study is more complicated o The study has a flaw in it IT IS A LITTLE BIT MORE DIFFICULT THAN WHAT YOU WOULD SEE ON AN EXAM o The questions on the exercise are the types you would see on the exam! Institutional Review Board (IRB) o We now have the IRB o YOU NEED TO KNOW THIS There is a branch of the Allegheny College IRB called the Ethics committee: o This a committee of Allegheny College faculty which reviews experiments that involves fellows students as participants
