Psychology 206 – Class Notes – 10/1/08 TODAY – Scales of measurement Do exercise #12 in pencil There is a README Bring it to class Read Chapter #7 GO OVER THE ANSWER KEY FOR EXAM #1 Measurement Figuring out exactly what you are going to count, what you are going to use to calculate things Assigning values: - ACT score (SAE score) - GPA - Class rank - Amount of drug administered - Sex: male=0 ; female=1 o We can assign values to different variables Aspect of the social network: o Number of close friends they have o Number of people with whom you live (home environment) o Rate friendliness The measurement has to deal with assigning values (numbers) o We can assign values to any variable we would like Rats: o How long it takes to find the bait o Count the number of errors the rat makes Sports o What aspect of sports could you measure in sports o Points scored o Statistics o # of hours students practice per week o # of sports Lots of things we can measure or count
