There is an innate striving for development – capacity for achievement – humans strive for self-actualization If you just leave people alone, people with reach a state of self-actualization If you leave people alone, they will grow Impediments to growth (development, self-actualization): o Conditional positive regard – If you put the cat’s tail in the electrical socket, I won’t love you anymore This is damaging o In order to rectify the impediments, you need to give unconditional positive regard and empathy Unconditional positive regard – I will still value as a human being (love you), even if you do something wrong. Empathy This psychological viewpoint is not that popular anymore Carl Rogers – key man for humanistic model o One of the therapists – He was very much an empiricist – he wanted people to know what he was doing Family Systems Model What are the fundamental assumptions under this model?
