Jesus A. Campos Eating Disorders Essay From Body & Soul Magazine June 2004 Edition by Lee Hoffman In the United States alone over five million people suffer from some type of eating disorder. About 90 percent of the people that suffer from these disorders are young women. The main reason for this is that these women tend to go on strict diets in order to get the perfect body. According to scientific research this cause plays a major role in the triggering of such disorders. Such problems are a major concern to the medical community in the United States and around the world. Eating disorders can lead to tragic consequences such as death from starvation, cardiac arrest, and other medical complications, and in worst cases to suicide. Currently, scientists from the National Institute of Mental Health are studying the many eating disorders and developing ways to treat them. The primary eating disorder that scientists are concerned about the most is anorexia nervosa. This is the most commonly found eating disorder in many adolescent. People who suffer from this problem intentionally starve themselves. They look at themselves as if they were overweight. This problem usually starts in young people around the time they hit puberty. They will usually lose about 15 percent of their total body weight. Sometimes they must be hospitalized to prevent starvation. The main characteristic of people that suffer from anorexia nervosa will diet relentlessly and never believe that they are thin enough even when they become extremely underweight. Another characteristic of anorexic people is that they will put themselves through intensive exercise routines in order to keep their perfect figure. One of the most frightening aspects of the disorder is that people with anorexia continue to think they are overweight even when they are bone-thin. For reasons not understood, they become

terrified of gaining any weight. They also refuse to eat in front of other people. Women with anorexia have a loss of their monthly menstrual periods and men often become impotent. People with anorexia nervosa will usually develop sometime of medical complication.
