Jesus Campos MCAS Iwakuni, JA Question: Thoroughly identify and discuss what you feel are the major differences between prose (the standard way of writing) and poetry. Be sure to include how traditional elements of writing (i.e. subject, setting, character, word choice, and images) function in poetry. Many differences exist between prose and poetry. Unlike prose, poetry invites the reader to interpret its imagery. The reader creates his own understanding of what is being said. He or she may derive many different themes for the poem. There will rarely be just one exact interpretation about the writing. A poem is written in a series of stanzas, which are separate groups of lines that make it look different from a paper written in prose. A poem is characterized for its economy of expression, vividness of imagery, power of emotion and use of sound. All these elements combined together will give the reader pleasure when he hears the poem and will help him as well to understand the poem in a much clearer way.
