Theme - Pgs. 117-123 Question: Define tone, symbolism, and theme. In a short paragraph explain how each of these elements function in a short story. Tone. It is the way the author is expressing his thoughts towards the readers. It is the attitude that has been taken to express ideas in writing. The tone plays a mayor role in the short story. The author can use a vast variety of words to make the tone formal, neutral or informal. Using simple or compound sentences can change the tone in the short story. Tone can be simple and dull by using simple sentences or it can be complex by using compound sentences to give the reader a summary of different actions in just one sentence. Symbolism. Symbolism is the way in which certain things represent others. For example, you might think of a horror movie that you are about to watch. The first thing that you
