Week 8 (12/13 – 12/19) 1) Read : Visions Module 5 Conclusion Pgs. 333-347 Question: Some works draw their power from questioning one of society’s values and others from creating a distinct picture of a time of a person. Choose a work assigned in this course and in an essay analyze how it achieves one of these purposes . In the story "The Glass Menagerie" there are a lot of family problems. If we look at this from a point of view that involves society's values, we see that all these problems in the family arise ever since Mr. Wingfield abandoned his family to go on to the war. Because of the way that society looks at a family without a masculine parent figure, Amanda goes through a lot of stress and feelings of being misjudged by people in the community. Another element that adds up to their problems is Laura's physical problem. Most people in society would just see her as a crippled person and therefore they would consider her to be different from everybody else. This is one of the major causes why Laura is extremely shy.
