Samantha Joseph Sociology 001 4/17/19 Critical Response Paper In Mills’ article “The Promise of Society”, Mills makes the comparison between the society and its history to an individual’s personal life. He stated that “neither can be understood without understanding both” meaning one can not survive without the other. In the article, Mills gave a few examples about the society and personal lives connecting, balancing each other out. Society’s economy can rise and fall, but that depends on if an individual is employed or unemployed. When these things change such as the economy it eventually becomes history. Mills states that men do not usually view their problems as historical changes, they believe it only affects their private orbit. However, every individual’s problems as a collective becomes a societal issue, which was Mills point. Mills fails to see that everybody’s life has a different outcome. Not everyone’s personal
