Lieu Ann Ross September 8, 2017 History 175 Johnny Got His Gun but Lost Everything in the Process- A Book Analysis of Johnny Get Your Gun by Dalton Trumbo Dalton Trumbo’s Johnny Got His Gun focuses on the story of Joe Bonham, a young man pulled into World War 1 who paid the ultimate sacrifice for a war he has no real connection to. Joe spends the rest of his life suspended in a limbo he considers a fate worse than death because he is left without the ability to see, talk, or hear. He has no way of communicating with the outside world for most of the book. The gradual process he goes through learning his has lost both arms, both legs, his sense of hearing, sight, and the ability to speak or breathe on his own, overwhelms him. Trumbo’s descriptive language makes you feel the pain and agony of his situation. When Joe recalled “He felt hot damp skin all over him and the dampness enabled him to feel his bandages. He was wrapped in them from to bottom. Even his head.” (Trumbo 10), he realizes how seriously he is hurt. Reading that passage made my chest tighten and feel a sense of
