MODERN THEORISTS FREUD’S PSYCHOSEXUAL THEORY OF DEVELOPMENT Freud was a medical doctor who studied with Charcot (hypnotism) in Paris. He believed that most of the motivation underlying human behavior is subconscious. He divided personality into three structures: ID The structure of personality that consists of in- stincts, which are an individual's store of psy- chic energy. Operates under the Pleasure Principle. Has no morality. Eros - life wish - libido - sex Thanatos - death wish - aggression EGO The structure of personality that deals with real- ity. Has no morality. Makes rational decisions. SUPEREGO The structure of personality that is the moral branch and takes into account whether something is right or wrong.
