Tyler Barnes English 1102M Simrill October 25, 2006 In the story "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner, there is speculation about the different characters symbolizing various objects. The story is written in the Southern Gothic style in order to enhance the story. By using the Southern Gothic style and by comparing Emily to the post Civil War South, Faulkner delivers a chilling story with a very perverse ending. Miss Emily represents the post Civil War South and all of her characteristics correspond to those of the South. Emily is a very stubborn woman and refuses to change her ways. She is supposed to pay her taxes to the town of Jefferson but when city authorities show up to collect them, she says, “See Colonel Sartoris. I have no taxes in Jefferson.” Colonel Sartoris, who has been dead for over ten years, was the mayor of Jefferson after Miss Emily’s father died and he remitted her taxes. He also created a story that Emily’s father had loaned money to the town because he knew that Emily thought herself too high to receive any charity. In this situation, Emily represents the South after reconstruction and Colonel Sartoris represents the North because the South did not want to accept help from the North because they felt they were above the North.
