Allison Wiest Bi-101: Writing Assignment 1 Dr. Vamochka Section 4 10-10-07 Recent advances have provided scientists with the technology to manipulate the human genome. If used correctly, this newfound knowledge could be very helpful to society. By being able to manipulate the human genome doctors will be able to help people in several ways. With these advances doctors can alter DNA to fix mutations in genes, before a child is born, to prevent any diseases or predisposed dispositions to ensure a long, healthy life. Trisomy 21, more commonly known as Down Syndrome, is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of an extra copy of genetic material on the twenty-first chromosome. With the ability to alter genes, doctors could eliminate the extra chromosome before a child is born to prevent the disease. This is just one example of how this discovery could be beneficial to humans. This ability to alter genes would prevent diseases, mental disorders, and any other undesired condition cause by genetics.
