2 BUSINESS COMMUNICATION COURSE DESCRIPTOR RATIONALE Effective communication contributes significantly to organisational success. Despite its importance, business communication has not grown, as it should. Realising this, both industry and academic sectors have begun training employees and students on business communication and its relevance. It has become all the more evident that business communication is vital for effective functioning of business units. COURSE AIMS The aim of the course is to introduce you to the essential elements of business communication. The aims of this course are two-fold: first, to get you to become aware of the fact that, in the business world, some styles of writing and speaking are more effective in achieving the goals of an organisation than other ways; secondly, to help you to master those ways of speaking and writing appropriately and effectively, to help you to master those ways of speaking and writing appropriately and effectively in the business world. You will achieve these goals by understanding what communication means, understanding its kinds and characteristics, acquiring the tools and understanding the styles for communication effectively and applying those tools and styles to real-life practices in communication. It will cover the acceptable formats for most forms of business correspondence both internal and external correspondence. The course will also provide guidelines on how to communicate and interact with colleagues at all levels of the organizational hierarchy and importantly in a multicultural environment. COURSE OBJECTIVES On successful completion of the course, you should be able to: explain the concept of business communication skills. define communication and identify its kinds, and characteristics; explain the guides to effective communication; name and describe the elements of effective communication; outline the process of communication; demonstrate the writing of different forms of practical communication, namely, the letter and other forms of correspondence, reports and minutes, and write samples of oral presentations and show by practical performance how oral communication is carried out. Communicate credibly and deliver both written and spoken messages that are adapted to the specific needs of your audience and situation. Realize the persuasive strategies most effective in writing and speaking situations. Judge information and information sources critically. Build sound arguments, using data and logic, when delivering a persuasive message. Articulate and defend your opinions on case studies, world events, and issues clearly.
