Unformatted text preview: Study of Psyc: • Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes – Basic tenets of psychology • Empirical evidence • Critical thinking • Systematic research methods Pseudopsychologies: • Pseudopsychologies are unreliable approaches that do not use the scientific method • Examples of pseudopsychologies include: – Astrology : system that tries to relate personality to the movement of the stars – Palmistry : idea that reading a person’s character from the lines on their palms – Psychokinesis : notion that humans can move objects through mental concentration – Follicology : notion that personality characteristics are related to hair color Psychological Research: • Two forms of psychological research: – Basic research seeks answers for theoretical questions • E.g. How is hunger controlled by the brain? – Applied research seeks answers for specific application problems • E.g. Organizational psychology studies leadership, job satisfaction, job training, and development Let’s try a couple of examples….. Goals of Psychology: • Description of behavior – Careful observation • Explanation – Identify causes of behavior • Prediction – Specify conditions where behaviors occur • Change in behavior** – Alter behaviors that are maladaptive Areas of Psychology: • Clinical • Educational • School • Industrial/organiz-ational • Developmental Psycology by Degree: Psychology = Philosophy: • Plato – Vegetative--> abdomen, desire/appetite – Animal--> heart, emotion – Immortal-->skull, reason and rationality • Aristotle--> rational thought in heart – Heart races, but you thinking calms it down • Catholic Church – Liver--> nutrients to Natural Spirits – Heart--> Natural Spirits to Vital Spirits – Base of the Brain--> Vital to Animal Spirits – Ventricles store animal spirits • 1st ventricle: sensation spirits • 2nd ventricle: reason and thought • 3rd ventricle: memories Rene Descartes: • Father of modern thought/philosophy...
