Chapter 3 Notes - Organic Compounds - contain carbon and at least one hydrogen atom * Methane is the simplest organic compound - Functional groups - lone atoms are clusters of atoms that are covalently bonded to carbon atoms of organic compounds. Carbon - Each carbon atom can covalently bond with as many as 4 other atoms Functional Groups - Number, kind and arrangement of groups influences structural and chemical properties of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acid Building Organic Compounds -Groups of Organic Compounds - simple sugars, fatty acids, amino acids, and nucleotides. - Monomers- structural units of larger molecules - Polymers- repeating monomers - Reactions by which a cell builds and rearranges require energy and ENZYMES - Enzymes- proteins that make substances react faster than they would on their own. 1. Functional-group transfer- functional group split away from one molecule is transferred to another 2. Electron transfer- an electron split away from one molecule is given to another
