Alliance Supermarket – Week 5 Assignment 2 Alliance Supermarket New and Innovative Uses of Information from the POS System Supermarkets today sell a wide variety of products with many options and choices. Suppliers of these food stores continually push new products into the market to meet the demands of the consumer and capture trends within customer buying patterns. To maximize profits, stores must have a keen understanding of who their customer is and what precisely they are purchasing for their households. Gathering this information is pertinent to the lifeblood of the business and ultimately assists in the decision making process for future allocations. Based on Alliance Supermarket's current scenario, there are a few items that can help better serve its customers. Vonderembse (2013) states, "The purpose of inventory management systems is to provide information so that sufficient inventory will exist to meet the company's objectives" (Section 10.2). The store must keep in mind that adequate quantities of a product must be available when the customer purchases, they must be able to push new products that are introduced to the market, and Alliance must be able to complete all of while keeping costs low. The point-of-sale system that Alliance Supermarket has collects specific data on the customers that shop there. It is essential to understand what the information collected means and how to use it to your advantage. With Alliance Supermarkets having multiple stores, this means that there is a different kind of shopper profile at each one.
