Moore2013, 2014Page 1 Dramatis personae - Meet the characters The Reed Household and Connections: Jayne Eyre- The protagonist and narrator of the novel, Jane is small and plain-looking. An orphan, she is raised in a foster home where she is unhappy and powerless, until, at the age of 10, she is sent away to Lowood School where she does well. Jane grows during the course of the novel into an independent woman who marries the man of her choice because she loves him. Uncle Reed-The brother of Jane’s deceased mother and Mrs. Reed’s late husband who out of love for his dead sister and affections for Jane made his wife promise that she would raise Jane as her own child. The young Jane believes that she feels the presence of his ghost in the house.
