Zarefsky: Chapter 1 Notes Focus on Critical Thinking and Strategic Planning 1. Critical Thinking – the ability to form and defend your own judgments rather than blindly accepting or instantly rejecting what you hear or read. 2. Facts – statements that can be verified by someone other than the speaker. 3. Opinions – subjective judgments based on experience or expertise, not capable of being verified by someone else. 4. Strategic Planning – the process of identifying your goals and then determining how best to achieve them. Public Speaking and Communication 5. Communication – interaction that builds connections between people that helps them to understand each other and to recognize common interests. -public speaking is continuous communication -some ideas more important, or salient, to listener 6. Feedback – responses from the audience to the speaker, often in the form of nonverbal cues. The Rhetorical Situation What the Rhetorical Situation Is 7. Situation – the particular context in which a speech takes place. 8. Rhetoric – the study of how messages affect people 9. Rhetorical Situation – a situation in which people’s understanding can be changed through messages
