Asthma is a global health issue, troubling patients, families, health care systems, and
governments. Despite the accessibility of numerous treatments and disease management
standards, many patients have asthma that remains uncontrolled or not adequately controlled
(Rance, 2011). According to Arcangelo, Peterson, Wilbur & Reinhold (2017), asthma is
described by a tightening and hyperresponsiveness of the airways that can lead to asthmatic
attacks. The purpose of this essay is to discuss long term as well as quick relief treatment for
patients who have asthma, medications used for care and to explain the stepwise approach for
management and treatment of asthma.
Long -Term Control vs. Quick Relief Options
The two main types of asthma medicines are quick-relief medicines and long-term
control medicines. According to Arcangelo, Peterson, Wilbur & Reinhold (2017), long term
control medicines are also known as controller prescriptions, or maintenance medicines work
over a period of time to relieve airway inflammation and help prevent asthma symptoms and are
designed to achieve and maintain control of persistent asthma long term. Extended term drugs
incorporate inhaled corticosteroids, long-acting beta-agonist (LABAs), leukotriene modifiers,
