What is the main purpose of this extract? What is the significance of this extract in relation to the work as a whole? Through the ShakThe main purpose of this extract is that it reveals the charcter and foshadows future events in the play A line in a play may: 1. Advance plot 2. Reveal character or show the development of character - - - 3. Present a contrast in character - It is evident that there is a contrast in character through what Cassio displays the image of Iago is VS what his true image appears to be in his soliloquy - Cassio says, “Good night honest man” the word honest contrasts the image that he appears to have when he is left alone, he denies the truth and doesn’t want to admit his act of evilness which is shown as he says, “ And what is he then that says I play the villain.” 4. Establish relationships between characters in an early scene or show these relationships changing in later scenes - Iago and Cassio relationship early in the scene vs later on changes immediately. - Iago appears to want to help and become a good friend for Cassio as he tells him, “ You are in the right. Good night, lieutenant, I must to the watch.” This provides comfort and a sense of care to Cassio that his friend truly wants what’s best for him, but this is revealed to be untrue in the second paragraph - 5. Afford a dramatic or comic relief of tension 6. Direct the audience’s sympathies towards or away from a certain character - “To counsel Cassio to this parallel course, directly to his good?” This statement
