Page 2I am writing this letter to help empower yourself to be a great member of Carthage Fire and Rescue. Any firefighter of Carthage Fire and Rescue should be empowered to stop all unsafe practices. The definition of empowerment is to enable, or to equip or supply with an ability. Speaking up within the department from non-officers is not authorized but when itcomes to unsafe practices, we ask our members to speak up. We encourage our firefighters tovoice their concern when they see an unsafe act that is about to take place, without fear of negative consequences for speaking up for safety reasons. I would encourage you to read the departments standard operating procedures/guidelines (SOPs/SOGs).As you find yourself working for the department and working along other departments within the county, you will see that there are people from all ages. You will see that not everyone has the culture traits of members speaking up to seasonal members. The older generations don’t like to see a younger member speaking up to the older members. The biggest challenge with that is different age generations working together. Situational awareness is a key part to all members of Carthage Fire and Rescue. You will need to remember to not get tunnel vision in a task, keep your head on a swivel for any unsafe acts for yourself and fellow firefighters. I have seen it myself, that I got too focused
