Experiment 3: Human Reflexes Reflex: A Patterned involuntary response to a stimulus which reduces or limits the effect of the stimulus. e Monosynaptic (Hoffman reflex) e Polysynaptic ( eg. Recurrent inhibition) Reflex Arc: Receptor Afferent nerve fiber Integrator (spinal cord) Efferent nerve fiber Effector Hoffman Reflex/H-reflex/Stretch Reflex of the Gastrocnemius muscle: Receptors: Stretch receptors Afferent limb: 1A afferent Integrator: Dorsal root of spinal cord Efferent limb: α -Motor neurons Remember in this exercise you are stimulating a mixed nerve ie: both afferent and efferent fibers. H-wave: signal goes through reflex loop. Afferent fibers have larger diameter hence they are stimulated at lower voltage. Occurs 25-35ms after stimulus onset Increase stimulus intensity increase H wave magnitude (why?) Further increase in stimulus intensity also stimulate α -motor neurons m-wave shorter distance to travel to
