Justin Gardiner Dr. El-Badry CULF 3331: International Development Germany Foreign Policy Roger Cohen, a journalist for the New York Times , writes an article entitled, “A New German Assertiveness on Its Foreign Policy.” In his writings, Cohen refers a great deal to an article written in an edition of the monthly review of German unions, by then German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder. The basic issue at hand is the way Germany will from now on portray itself and the view as far as their own economy and future are concerned. Germany has apparently had a reputation of “being proud of its performance but ashamed of its history. Well after this point, the Chancellor mentions nothing of Hitler, and nothing of the Nazi’s, but aims to look forward and never back. He views that his country is a “great power” in Europe, and has paid its dues to run with the other European powers. NATO was an organization “that served to protect Germany, but also protection against Germany; (this) has no value from now on.” This country will be in a self proclaim pursuance of national interests.
