Unformatted text preview: Justin Gardiner Capstone Spring 2009 January 29, 2009 Professor Ortiz Submission One Outline General Information: The topic I chose was steroids and the effects it has on professional sports. Statistics/ evidence demonstrating seriousness: 1.) Athletes being held out of the hall of fame due to steroid accusations. 2.) Congress becoming involved with Major League Baseball, holding hearings. Identify three solutions : 1.) Steroids, among a great number of other athletic supplements, banned absolutely from all sports. (current policy) 2.) Steroids allowed for professional sport competitions. 3.) History of steroid use has no barring for present day consequences, but guilty parties subject to regular doping tests. Normative Question: Should steroids and other athletic supplements be barred from professional sports? II. Side 1 Identify sides position:- Steroids should be absolutely banned from sporting competitions, and severe punishments should come from breaking these rules. Parties to the Controversy: 1.) Congress 2.) Sports fans 3.) Professional Sports leagues (except the NHL) 4.) U.S. Olympic Committee Issues: 1.) Corruption in sports. 2.) Influences high school, and other young athletes to take steroids. 3.) Any record achieved over, any illustrious career, is tainted by a conviction of steroids. 4.) Steroids are harmful to the body, and unsafe. Arguments relating to issues: 1.) That steroids did not use to be a part of professional sports past times, and that the infiltration of the drug into major league sports has corrupted the game. 2.) This stance says that the pressure to be bigger, faster, stronger like professional athletes is too great, and influences impressionable young athletes to consume the drug. 3.) This stance views that records created without the help of performance enhancing drugs, should not be depleted by an athlete who had the help of steroids. This person believes that the record achieved with the help of performance enhancing drugs should have an asterisk next to it wherever its presented. 4.) This view argues that the side affects of steroids are detrimental to the body and mind of the user. Plans/ Actions: 1.)
