Infrared Spectroscopy and Analgesic Drug Identification Author: Brittany Silverman Organic Chemistry 243A, Section 001 Instructor: Barbara Mooney Date work was performed: February 2, 2009 Date work was submitted: February 9, 2009 Abstract: The aim of the Infrared Spectroscopy and Analgesic Drug Identification is to isolate and identify Acetylsalicylic Acid by the melting point, percent recovery, Rf value and weight. The manufacturer’s amount of active ingredient was 325 mg. After the isolation of the active ingredient there was 206 mg of pure material. The percent recovery was 56% and the melting point was 135 degrees Celsius, which was exactly the melting point of ASA. When TLC was performed, the Rf values of the manufacturer and sample were both 0.63.
