Handout Fall 2007, Lab 1 Page 1 Example Site Frontage Road off Northcrest Rd— Drivers learn that traffic is controlled and routed by means of patterns that soon become familiar. For example, the diamond interchange is so common that drivers will assume a diamond configuration unless they can plainly see that a different design has been used. The Northcrest Rd and I-85 interchange looks very similar to a diamond interchange. However, there is a Frontage Rd. that runs parallel to I-85 for a short segment. The Frontage Rd and Northcrest Rd intersection looks like it is the forth entrance ramp to complete the diamond interchange. Drivers unfamiliar with this location often turn onto the Frontage Rd assuming that it is the entrance to I-85. In addition to this atypical design, there is a lack of clear signage. There are several signs to warn drivers about a railroad crossing and several of the interstate directional signs are missing. Figure 1: Example Site Map
