Digestive DisordersINITIAL POSTThere are two types of inflammatory bowel disease, which are ulcerative colitis (UC) andCrohn disease (CD). The prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease is about 1.6 million people in the United States with about 70,000 new cases per year (Huether, 2017). Another digestive disorder is irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). IBS is currently a symptom-based disease characterized by recurrent abdominal pain with altered bowel habits (Huether, 2017). Pathophysiological Mechanisms of IBDsIBS is an idiopathic disease caused by a dysregulated immune response to host intestinal microflora (Medscape, 2017). As mentioned above, the two major types of IBD is UC and CD. There is a genetic predisposition for IBD, and patients with this condition are more prone to the development of malignancy (Medscape, 2017). Pathophysiological Mechanisms of IBSIrritable bowel syndrome is a functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by abdominal pain and altered bowel habits in the absence of a specific and unique organic pathology (Medscape, 2018).
