Wylie, Lawren September 1, 2008 British Lit. 103B—Summer 2008 PAPER SUMMARY th Century’s Intellectual Society Pre-Raphaelite ideals (beauty, truth to nature, etc.) “The Brotherhood” ( Rossetti, Millais, Hunt, 1848)—sought to maintain pre- Raphaelite ideals in their artwork liberal drug use—sought out to “elevate” or “exalt” the mind; the experience was sought to provide artistic/literary/etc. inspiration I. Visual Evidence —van Gogh ( Absinthe) , Waterhouse ( La Belle Dame Sans Merci) , Rosetti ( The Blessed Damozel) Drug use was especially prevalent with these artists (absinthe, cocaine, laudanum, chloral, etc.) Oftentimes drug use was used to help “exalt” the mind—artwork was created from a drug trip, or a dream experienced while under the influence of the respective drug—or both!
