Crystalized versus Fluid IntelligenceCrystallized and Fluid Intelligence both play a major role in an individual’s cognitive functions as they age. One of the natural process of aging is a change in how one is able to utilizetheir gained intelligence and also their ability to continue to learn new things and adapt as they get older. Crystallized Intelligence is the intelligence that is gained as the result of years of experiences both academically, socially, and professionally.This wisdom is gained from life experiences and will vary between individuals dependent upon their cultural and familial experiences. While Fluid Intelligence has more to do with the ability to create and be innovative, this is the level of intelligence one uses to learn new things and to create new ideas.As individuals age there are significant benefits gained from both their crystallized and fluid intelligence. Older individuals crystallized intelligence helps them to continue to do the basic and routine things in life without giving it much thought because these things are embedded. This helps individual who with age may begin to experience some cognitive delays tocontinue to live a self-reliant and productive life. One of the major benefits of fluid intelligence is the ability to learn new things and develop new things helps individuals express their creativity. As we, age there is a level of freedom to be more expressive and to explore interest in new things due to the lack of responsibility of caring for others. In this later stage in life, many seniors discover new interest and flourish in the arts as a way of expression and creativity.
